How to bring up mental health screening at doctor's?
January 23, 2009 - I am a college student and would like to go to the campus doctor about a mental health screening. I have been hearing things that no one else hears along with occasionally seeing things no one else sees. I started looking up information in schizophrenia when this started. A good friend of mine has it so I am familiar with some of the symptoms. I believe I may be in the early stages of it. I don't know how to bring up this concern with the doctor. Any suggestions? And please, no answers from people just trying to be funny. I am looking for serious suggestions.
- ask for consult with psychiatist. Also u may gifted psycically the fact that ur aware others dont see these things is very good sign
- I agree with the others go to a specialized doctor maybe a psychologist or counselor
- go to a specialized type of doctor. Thats what my friend did and it worked better for him because oringially when he told his primary doctor his doctor wouldnt listen to him.
I just walked in, sat down and she said "what can I help you with?" I replied, " I think I have schizophrenia." I was told by friends and family members though that I was hallucinating and had paranoid delusions. I didn't recognize my own symptoms until they were pointed out to me.
- You can simply tell him you;re very interested in this topic and ask the question just like that. Moreover, here is a source that will definite help you if you ask your question here first and know about the issue beforehand: http://www.myhealth-forum.com/
I would tell him. Most likely he might refer you somewhere else and then again he might write you a prescription for something that might or might not work. Either way, just tell him. Not a problem to be taken lightly. If your afraid of going to the campus doc., then don't. Go somewhere else that's not affiliated with school and places you have to be on a daily basis. What you need is medication and counseling. I would suggest calling a mental health treatment facility in your area and make an appointment ( or go in) to be seen. They do have help for this and your not alone. They will schedule an assessment with you, ( which is an evaluation). Then they will tell you what they believe is going on with you ( in medical terms) and can tell you the kinds of treatment they can offer to you and then go from there. It is a fairly quick process. If you have no insurance or little income, you can still get help. Hope this helps.
